6” x 8” Original Watercolor Painting

What does it mean to be rooted? What grounds us and gives us strength when the storms of life try to push you around? I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be rooted. I’ve been pretty desperate for it over the years, if I’m being honest. There has been so much transition and I just want deep, strong roots. When I think about what it means to be rooted, I think about the things I do that ground me. And when I think about things that ground me I can’t help but think about soul care. When I teach classes on soul care, I talk about the importance of caring for the soil of your soul. We can’t put down roots, we can’t be grounded, if the soil of our souls isn’t healthy enough to even allow the roots to go down deep. But how do we care for the soil? How do we care for our souls? With different practices that soothe and ground us.

This collection is multi-layered for me- these images are from my home, the place where my am actively putting down roots, but the act of creating them cared for the soil of my soul as well. Painting is so soothing to me. It grounds me and makes me feel more like myself. It roots me. Painting this was an act of rooting my soul and rooting my body. This is a special and tender painting to me. I almost feel hesitant to part with it. But one of the things I care about is creating beauty that cares for the soul, so my hope is that this beauty that cared for my soul in creating it will care for yours in receiving it.
