Placemaking
“There is one thing I know absolutely: making and tending good and beautiful places is not a dishonorable retreat. It is a holy pursuit.”
— Christie Purifoy, Placemaker
Home and place are a privilege not to be taken lightly
.
Although home and place seem like rights that everyone should have, the reality is that they are not. For those of us who do have this gift of place, what do we do with it? Is your place a refuge to yourself and to others? Is it warm and comfortable, or just a place to be? How does your place make you feel?
If you do have a place, I hope that your place makes you feel like you are at home. Places are important— they shelter us, comfort us, usher in the sacred. They can also be given to others.
I spent many years as a social worker, and often felt guilty having and wanting beautiful things when the people I worked with had very few. As a Christian, I always thought that it was wrong to have a desire for “things.” These two thoughts combined made me feel guilty for loving beautiful things and being drawn to beauty. But then one day I had a conversation with a friend that entirely changed my entire perspective. She reminded me that God loves beauty, that he created the world to be filled with beauty, and that God loves hospitality. He wants us to welcome others in! If I desire to give hospitality to others and welcome them into my home, is it not good to create a space that is warm and welcoming for them? Ever since then I have been drawn to creating beautiful spaces. It is one of my very favorite things to do, and I would absolutely love to do that for you too.
Placemaking is not just interior design, though interior designers are often also placemakers.
I am not trying to be an interior designer— I don’t have brand partnerships or know the top companies to purchase furniture from, but I do think that creating beautiful, peaceful places is important and I want to help you with that.
Whether it is your home, your office, or another place where you spend your time, let me take some of the pressure off of you to make your space beautiful and comfortable. You do not have to spend a small fortune to be a placemaker. Painting a room, choosing rugs, pillows and art, can all be done in a cost effective way.
Placemaking is not about perfection.
It is hard to live in a perfect home. Let your home be YOUR home. Live in it. Make it beautiful and comfortable, make a place there, but make it in such a way that you can truly live there!
Making things beautiful is one of my absolute favorite things, and I would be so thrilled help you make your place more comfortable, cozy, and beautiful as well.
